Twin Newborn Photography Sessions: What to Expect

October 1, 2026

Expecting twins brings a whole different set of questions when it comes to planning a newborn photography session. As a Cincinnati newborn photographer, I love working with twin families, but I also know the process looks a little different than a single-baby session in some important ways. Here’s everything worth knowing if you’re expecting twins and starting to think about your newborn session.

Why Timing Looks Different for Twins

For a single baby, I typically recommend scheduling a newborn session within the first one to two weeks after birth. For twins, timing often shifts earlier, and there’s a good reason for that. According to the CDC, a significant portion of twin pregnancies deliver before 37 weeks, meaning twins are frequently born earlier than single babies and may need extra time in the hospital or a NICU stay before coming home.

Because of this, I always recommend building extra flexibility into your due date planning. Rather than locking in a specific date months in advance, we reserve a general window and finalize your actual session date once your babies have arrived and you’ve gotten the all-clear from your pediatrician for outings or visitors.

In-Home or Studio: Which Works Best for Twins?

I offer both in-home and studio newborn sessions for twin families, and each comes with its own advantages.

In-home sessions can be especially appealing for twin parents, since managing two newborns already means enough logistics without adding travel to the mix. Staying home also means everything you need — extra swaddles, a changing station, a place to nurse or bottle-feed — is already set up and familiar.

Studio sessions offer a calm, climate-controlled space with consistent lighting, which can actually simplify things when you’re managing two babies with two different schedules. Since I only work with a simple moses basket and a couple of neutral swaddles, the setup stays streamlined regardless of which twin needs attention at any given moment.

If you’d like to compare both options in more detail, I’ve laid out what’s included in each on my in-home newborn photography page and studio newborn packages page.

What to Expect During Your Twin Session

Twin sessions naturally take a bit longer than single-baby sessions, since we’re working with two different feeding schedules, two different temperaments, and often two very different moods on session day. A twin session typically includes:

  • Individual portraits of each baby separately
  • Portraits of the twins together, both swaddled and unswaddled
  • Family portraits with parents and both babies
  • Sibling portraits, if you have other children joining
  • Small detail shots of each baby individually, since even identical twins often have small, distinguishing features worth capturing

Plan for a longer session overall, generally three to four hours, to allow enough time for feeding, soothing, and swapping between babies without ever feeling rushed.

A Note on Twin Newborn Photography Safety

Photographing two newborns at once requires extra care and patience. Poses that place both babies close together are done with careful support and close supervision at every moment, never left unattended even briefly. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, newborns should always have proper head and neck support and should never be placed in a position they can’t safely hold on their own, a principle that applies just as much, if not more, when two babies are being photographed together.

Because managing two babies at once naturally takes longer, patience is built into every part of a twin session. If one baby needs a break while the other is calm, we simply photograph them individually and come back together once both are settled.

Managing Two Different Temperaments

It’s extremely common for twins to have noticeably different personalities, even from their very first weeks. One baby might settle immediately into a deep sleep, while the other stays alert and curious throughout the entire session. This is completely normal, and not something to worry about. We simply adapt, photographing each baby in whatever state they’re naturally in, rather than forcing both into matching poses or moods.

Some of the most genuine, memorable images from twin sessions come from embracing this difference rather than fighting it: one twin sound asleep while the other looks curiously at the camera, for example, tells a real, honest story about your family’s specific dynamic from the very beginning.

Preparing for Your Twin Newborn Session

A little extra preparation goes a long way for a twin session specifically:

Feed both babies on a staggered schedule shortly before the session, if possible. This helps ensure at least one baby is calm and settled while we work with the other.

Bring extra of everything. Double the diapers, double the wipes, double the outfit options — twin sessions benefit from over-preparing rather than under-preparing.

Coordinate outfits thoughtfully. Many twin parents love matching or coordinating outfits, and I’m happy to help plan this. Soft neutrals with subtle variation (same color, slightly different style) often photograph better than exact matches, since it avoids images feeling overly uniform. If you’d like more guidance, I’ve written a full post on choosing color palettes for your session.

Bring an extra set of hands if possible. A grandparent, close family member, or friend can be a huge help managing one baby while the other is being photographed individually.

Keep your expectations realistic. A twin session is rarely perfectly smooth from start to finish, and that’s genuinely okay. Some of the best images come from the beautiful chaos of managing two newborns at once.

What If My Twins Are in the NICU?

If your twins need NICU time after birth, your newborn session timeline will naturally shift. I always recommend waiting until your pediatrician or NICU team gives clearance for outings or visitors before scheduling your session. Your babies’ health always comes first, and I’m happy to stay flexible and patient for as long as that process takes. Once you’re home and settled, we can plan a session that still captures that same newborn stage, even if it happens a bit later than the typical window.

Pricing for Twin Sessions

Sessions start with the standard $99 session fee, with digital images, prints, and albums available separately based on the products and package you choose afterward. Given the additional time and complexity involved in photographing two babies, it’s worth discussing your specific needs when you reach out, so we can plan a session structure that works well for your family.

Why Twin Pregnancies Often Mean Earlier Delivery

It’s not just anecdotal — the physical demands of carrying twins genuinely change the typical delivery timeline. The March of Dimes notes that the average twin pregnancy lasts about 36 weeks, compared to 39-40 weeks for a single baby, simply due to the added strain of carrying two babies. This is exactly why I encourage twin parents to reach out and reserve a general session window earlier in pregnancy than they might otherwise think necessary, so there’s no scrambling once babies actually arrive.

Why Twin Sessions Are Worth the Extra Planning

Twin parents already have so much on their plates, from double the feedings to double the laundry, that a newborn session can understandably feel like one more thing to manage. But this exact season, two brand-new babies experiencing the world together for the very first time, is genuinely irreplaceable. The dynamic between twins in these earliest weeks, whether they’re already showing distinct personalities or seem nearly identical in temperament, is something you’ll want documented well before it changes, which it inevitably will within just a few short weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do twin sessions cost more than single-baby sessions? The session fee itself is the same $99 starting point, though twin sessions typically run longer given the added complexity, which is worth discussing when you book.

When should we book our twin newborn session? As early as possible during pregnancy, since twins often arrive earlier than single babies. We’ll finalize the exact date once your babies have arrived.

What if our twins were born early or spent time in the NICU? That’s completely fine. We wait until your care team gives clearance for outings, and plan your session around your babies’ specific timeline and needs.

Can we include older siblings in the session? Absolutely. Many twin families include older siblings, and I’m happy to help plan a session that accommodates everyone’s comfort and attention span.

How long does a twin newborn session take? Plan for a longer session than a single-baby session, generally three to four hours, to allow enough time for feeding, soothing, and working with each baby individually.
