I’m a Miamisburg newborn photographer, and I’m so excited to share this in-home session with you today. Baby Elijah came into the world a couple of months ago, and I had the honor of photographing his family in the place that means the most to them — their own home.

Why We Photographed Elijah’s Session in the Nursery
For Elijah’s session, we kept everything in one room: the nursery. This is one of my favorite spaces to shoot in, and for good reason. The nursery holds a special place in every parent’s heart — it’s the first space you decorate while you’re waiting for your baby to arrive, and it’s where so many of the quiet, early moments of parenthood happen. Rocking your baby to sleep, reading the same story for the hundredth time, singing lullabies at 2 a.m. — it all happens in that room.
Because Elijah’s nursery had a full-size bed in it, we were still able to capture a real variety of images without leaving the space. We got photos by the nursery chair and window, the family gathered by the crib, and everyone together on the bed. Keeping a session to one room isn’t a limitation — it’s often a benefit. It means less to prep, less to tidy, and less pressure on you as a new parent who is already running on very little sleep.
This is one of the biggest advantages of choosing in-home newborn photography over a studio session: you don’t need a big, perfectly staged house. A single well-lit corner of a nursery is often all it takes.
Going With the Flow: Every Baby Sets Their Own Pace
While I typically aim to capture a range of shots during a session — including the classic sleepy, curled-up newborn poses — Elijah had other plans. He wanted to be awake and alert for nearly the entire session. When we got to the point where I’d usually do individual sleeping shots, we tried to soothe him down, but he simply wasn’t interested.
So we followed his lead instead, and it worked out beautifully. Some of the sweetest images from this session are the wide-eyed, awake shots of Elijah taking in the world around him for the first time. This is something I tell every family I work with: a newborn session isn’t about forcing a specific shot list. It’s about capturing your baby as they actually are in that moment, and letting the day unfold at their pace.
We also captured plenty of the small details that make newborn photos so special — tiny fingers, tiny toes, the soft newborn hair that won’t stay that way for long. These detail shots are often the images parents find themselves looking at years later, remembering just how small their baby once was.
What to Expect From an In-Home Newborn Session
The best part of an in-home session is that it takes place in your home — your safe, familiar space. A few things I always want parents to know before their session:
- Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. Small apartment, starter home, not fully decorated yet — none of it matters. We work with the space you have.
- We build the session around your baby, not the other way around. If baby needs a feeding break, a diaper change, or just some time to settle, we pause and pick back up.
- You don’t have to “perform.” Genuine, relaxed moments between you and your baby almost always photograph better than posed smiles.

Tips for Preparing for Your Own Newborn Session
If Elijah’s session has you thinking about booking your own, here are a few things that help sessions go smoothly:
Book early. Newborn sessions ideally happen within the first one to two weeks after birth, while babies are still naturally sleepy and curl easily. Because of that tight window, I recommend booking during pregnancy — many families reserve their date around the same time they book their maternity session.
Keep the room warm. Newborns are more comfortable, and more likely to stay settled, in a warm room. This also matters for safety — the American Academy of Pediatrics offers helpful guidance on newborn comfort and safe handling that many of the same principles behind newborn posing are built around.
Don’t stress about the schedule. Newborns don’t run on a predictable clock in the first few weeks. The CDC’s guidance on newborn development is a good reminder that every baby’s early patterns — sleeping, feeding, alertness — vary widely, and that’s completely normal.
