Including Your Husband in Your Maternity Photography Session

One of the most common questions I get from expecting moms is whether — and how — to include their husband in their maternity session. My answer is almost always the same: absolutely, yes. As a Cincinnati maternity photographer, some of my favorite images come from couples sessions, and there’s a good reason for that. Pregnancy isn’t a solo journey, and your maternity photos shouldn’t be either.

If you’re on the fence about including your husband, or just not sure how it’ll work, here’s everything worth knowing.

Why Include Your Husband in Your Maternity Photos

It tells the full story of this season. Pregnancy affects the whole family, not just the person carrying the baby. Photos that include your husband capture the anticipation, partnership, and excitement you’re both experiencing together, not just the physical changes of pregnancy alone.

It captures a genuine, fleeting dynamic. The way your husband looks at you during this season, the way he might rest a hand on your bump, the quiet, protective energy so many partners have during pregnancy — these are moments that are easy to overlook in the day-to-day, but incredibly meaningful to look back on.

Your child will love seeing it. Someday, your son or daughter will look back at these images and see both of their parents anticipating their arrival together. That’s a powerful thing to be able to show them.

It doesn’t take away from solo bump shots. Including your husband doesn’t mean sacrificing the classic, solo maternity portraits you may already be picturing. A well-planned session includes both, so you get the best of everything.

According to a piece from the American Pregnancy Association, partner involvement throughout pregnancy — including in small, intentional moments like a maternity session — has real value in building shared connection to the pregnancy itself, especially for partners who don’t experience the physical changes firsthand.

Posing Ideas for Couples Maternity Photos

If you’re not sure what including your husband actually looks like during a session, here are some of my favorite approaches:

Hands on the bump. This is a classic for a reason. Whether it’s just his hands, or both of yours together, this simple pose captures a beautiful sense of shared anticipation.

Forehead-to-forehead or close embraces. Quiet, intimate poses where you’re simply close together — foreheads touching, a gentle hug from behind — tend to produce some of the most emotional, timeless images from a session.

Walking or laughing together. Candid, in-motion moments help capture your relationship as it naturally is, not just posed portraits. These often become some of my clients’ favorite images because they feel the most like “you.”

A quiet moment, just talking. Sometimes the best images come from simply letting you two talk to each other while I photograph candidly from a distance. These unguarded moments often produce the most genuine expressions of the whole session.

Solo shots of Dad with the bump. Don’t forget images of just your husband with your bump — a hand resting gently, or him looking down at your belly. These solo dad-and-bump images are often treasured just as much as the couple shots.

Including other children, if applicable. If this isn’t your first baby, incorporating older siblings into a few family portraits alongside your husband adds a beautiful, complete picture of your growing family.

What Should Husbands Wear?

A common concern I hear is that husbands feel unsure or self-conscious about their role in a maternity session, and outfit choice is often part of that. A few tips:

  • Keep it simple and coordinated, not matching exactly. A neutral button-down or sweater in a complementary tone to your own outfit works beautifully.
  • Avoid busy patterns or logos, for the same reason we avoid them for moms and babies — they distract from the people, not the fabric.
  • Comfort matters. If your husband feels comfortable and like himself, that ease will show up naturally in the photos.

If you’d like more detailed guidance on coordinating outfits for the whole family, I’ve written a full guide on choosing color palettes for your session, which applies just as well to maternity sessions as it does to newborn ones.

Addressing Common Hesitations

“My husband feels awkward in front of the camera.” This is incredibly common, and completely okay. Part of my job is helping both of you feel relaxed and natural, not stiff or posed. I use simple prompts and candid moments specifically to ease that self-consciousness, rather than asking anyone to hold an unnatural pose.

“We don’t know what to do with our hands or bodies.” You don’t need to know. I’ll guide you through simple, natural movements and prompts throughout the session — your only job is to be present with each other.

“He doesn’t think he needs to be in the photos.” This is one I hear often, and I always gently push back on it. Years from now, your child (and you) will treasure images that include both parents, not just one. This season belongs to your whole family, not just the person carrying the baby.

Making the Session Comfortable for Both of You

A relaxed maternity session comes down to a few key things:

  • Clear communication beforehand. Talk through what you’re both hoping to capture, so there are no surprises on session day.
  • Simple, guided prompts rather than stiff, static poses that feel unnatural to hold.
  • Built-in breaks. Especially later in pregnancy, standing and posing for extended periods can be tiring — we build in plenty of time to rest between setups.
  • A mix of posed and candid moments, so the gallery feels genuine rather than overly staged.

Studio or Outdoor: Which Setting Works Best for Couples?

Maternity sessions with your husband work beautifully in either setting. A studio session offers a clean, controlled, editorial feel — great for classic, timeless portraits. An outdoor, on-location session offers natural light and a more relaxed, candid feel, especially nice for walking or laughing-together shots. If you’re not sure which setting fits your vision, I’m always happy to talk through the options together.

When to Schedule Your Couples Maternity Session

The same general timing guidance applies here as any maternity session: somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks tends to be the sweet spot, giving you a full, beautiful bump while still feeling physically comfortable enough to move and pose together. If you’d like a deeper breakdown of timing, I’ve written a complete guide on the best time during pregnancy to book your maternity session.

It’s also worth coordinating your husband’s schedule early, especially if he has a demanding job or unpredictable hours. Booking your date well in advance helps make sure he can actually be there without last-minute scrambling.

The Value of These Images Down the Road

According to Zero to Three, a national child development nonprofit, a child’s early sense of family and belonging is shaped significantly by the relationships they observe and are told about from their earliest days, even before they can consciously remember them. Photos like these become part of that story, a tangible way to show your child, years later, just how loved and anticipated they were by both parents from the very beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for husbands to feel nervous about the session? Very normal. Most partners feel a little unsure at first, and it almost always fades within the first few minutes once we start with simple, natural prompts.

Can we do both solo bump shots and couple’s photos in the same session? Yes, absolutely. A well-planned session includes a mix of both, so you get a complete gallery.

What if my husband really doesn’t want to be photographed? That’s ultimately your decision as a couple, but I’d gently encourage you to consider it. These images tend to become some of the most treasured in a family’s entire collection.

Should we do a studio or outdoor session for couples photos? Both work beautifully. It comes down to whether you’re drawn to a clean, editorial studio look or a more natural, candid outdoor feel.
