One of the first questions I get from expecting moms is simple: when should you actually take maternity photos? If you’re not sure yet, you’re not alone — timing is one of the most common things clients ask about before they even start looking for a Cincinnati maternity photographer.
The Best Week for Maternity Photos
For most moms, the sweet spot is 32to 36 weeks. At this point, your belly is beautifully round and defined, but you’re usually still comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy a full session without feeling too fatigued. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the third trimester generally begins around week 28, which is exactly why this window works so well — you’re far enough along to show, but still moving comfortably. It’s the stage where that gorgeous “glow” everyone talks about tends to be at its peak, and there’s still enough time before baby arrives to plan, shop for outfit ideas, and pick a date without rushing.
That said, this window isn’t a hard rule. If you’re carrying multiples, you may want to book earlier — closer to 24-28 weeks — since, as the American Pregnancy Association notes, twin and triplet pregnancies often progress faster and deliver earlier than single pregnancies. If you’re managing a high-risk pregnancy, your comfort and your care team’s guidance always come first — Mayo Clinic’s pregnancy week-by-week guide is a great resource if you want to understand what’s typical for your specific stage, and sessions with me can always be adjusted or scheduled around what feels right for you.

What If Your Due Date Changes?
It happens more often than you’d think — most due dates shift by at least a few days, and it’s never something to stress over. As a Cincinnati maternity photographer, I build flexibility into every booking specifically because pregnancy doesn’t run on a fixed schedule. If your due date shifts, we simply shift your session with it — the goal is always to catch you at your most comfortable, confident stage, not to hit an exact date on a calendar. You can see how sessions typically flow from consult to gallery on my session experience page.

How This Connects to Booking Your Newborn Session
If you’re planning both maternity and newborn photos, timing your maternity session around 32-36 weeks also gives you a natural window to lock in your newborn date before baby arrives — something I talked about in When to Book Your Newborn Photos. Booking both early takes the pressure off later, when you’re deep in those final weeks and just want to rest and prepare — the CDC’s newborn care checklist is a helpful place to start if you’re building out your own to-do list for those final weeks.
