Congratulations, parents! You did it. You made it through the first year of your baby’s life. Your family got through the sleepless nights, the constant worry of asking “is this normal?”, the endless pediatrician visits, the growth spurts, the sleep regressions, the first solid foods — and somehow, you figured it all out.

Sure, there were some hard moments, but there were so many more good ones. Sweet memories, and a happy, healthy child to show for it. Looking back, I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “where did the time go?” Time really does fly. You’ve heard me say it before, but it bears repeating: the days are long, but the years are short.

So let’s celebrate. As a Cincinnati first birthday photographer, this is genuinely one of my favorite sessions to shoot all year — it’s playful, joyful, and full of personality in a way that’s completely different from a newborn session.

A first birthday photo session is a wonderful way to commemorate how far your family has come, and to capture your little one at such a special, in-between age. All of my first birthday and milestone sessions take place at my Cincinnati studio. There’s a good reason for that consistency: a controlled studio environment gives me full control over lighting, backdrops, and props, which matters even more once your baby is mobile, curious, and completely unpredictable — which, if you have a one-year-old, you already know very well.

Instead of managing outdoor variables like weather, uneven ground, or shifting natural light, we can focus entirely on your baby and let their personality lead the session. Backdrops and props at the studio are specifically chosen to be sturdy enough for a sitting or cruising baby, and easy to clean up after a cake smash.

When to Book Your First Birthday Session

I recommend booking your first birthday session at least a couple of months ahead of your little one’s actual birthday. You’re welcome to book even earlier than that if you’d like to lock in a preferred date. I do occasionally have last-minute openings, but availability isn’t guaranteed, so it’s always best to reach out as soon as you’re able.

For the “clean” portion of the session, soft neutrals work beautifully; for the cake smash itself, a simple outfit that’s easy to change out of (and doesn’t mind a little frosting) is the way to go.
