If you’ve been wondering what the best color palette is for your upcoming newborn photography session, you’re in the right place. As a Cincinnati and Mariemont newborn photographer, this is one of the questions I get asked most often by expecting parents — and it’s an easy one to get right once you know what to look for. Let’s talk about it, friends.

Best Newborn Photography Color Palettes

I almost always recommend neutrals or soft pastels for a newborn session. These lighter tones photograph beautifully and give that light, airy feel that defines a timeless newborn gallery. Adding touches of white is one of my favorite tricks — a soft pink or baby blue layered with white looks charming without ever feeling dated.

Neutrals also have a practical advantage: they match everything. They coordinate with what mom and dad are wearing, with your master bedroom, with your baby’s nursery. A neutral palette photographs beautifully today and will still feel timeless when you look back on these images in ten or twenty years, which is exactly the goal.

You Know Your Child Best

Keep in mind that no one knows your baby better than you do. Choose colors that complement your child’s coloring — skin tone, hair color, eye color — because the goal is always to keep the focus on them, not on what they’re wearing.

You also know what your baby is comfortable in. I’ve had plenty of clients tell me their little one absolutely hates overalls or high-necked shirts, and that’s valuable information going into a session. Soft, breathable fabrics matter more than most parents expect. Avoiding anything scratchy or stiff goes a long way toward keeping your baby content and settled, which almost always shows up in the final photos. The American Academy of Pediatrics also notes that newborns are especially sensitive to rough or restrictive fabrics against their skin, so comfort and photogenic style genuinely go hand in hand here.

Stay True to Your Family’s Aesthetic

Every family has a different sense of style, and that’s part of what makes each session unique. Some parents love peachy pinks for their baby girls, while others prefer to avoid pink altogether. Some love an all-white, minimalist look. Others are drawn to soft vintage details, or enjoy working in a few intentional pops of color. Whatever your aesthetic is, stay true to it — your photos should feel like your family, not a generic template.

It’s also worth thinking about what you, as parents, will be wearing. Many clients find it easier to choose their own outfits first (ideally in a neutral palette), then pick something for baby that coordinates. It’s a lot simpler to find one small, matching outfit for your newborn than to coordinate outfits for every person in the photos from scratch. That said, if you already have a sentimental or special outfit you want your baby photographed in — a hand-me-down gown, a family heirloom — start there, and build the rest of the palette around it.

Coordinate With Your Session Location

Think about where the session will actually take place. Choosing colors that complement your baby’s nursery, your master bedroom, or wherever you’d like photos taken makes a real difference in how cohesive the final gallery feels. If your nursery has soft blue walls, an outfit in white with small touches of blue will tie the whole scene together. If your master bedroom leans toward a dreamy lilac, soft creams or beige with purple or blue accents will complement it beautifully.

If your baby will spend any time in their crib during the session, coordinating their outfit with the crib sheets is a small detail that photographs surprisingly well.
