Here’s everything you need to know about booking a newborn photography session as a Kettering or greater Dayton-area parent. Congratulations! The sweet little baby you’ve so eagerly waited for is here, or on the way — let’s talk through exactly when and how to book your session.

Why Timing Matters for Newborn Photography
You’ve heard me say this before: the days are long, but the years are short. Newborn photography is the perfect way to capture those fleeting, early days of infancy. It all goes by so quickly, and your baby will change dramatically within their first year — even more so within just the first month. I work with Kettering and Dayton-area families and their newborns to capture those exact moments, so you can remember them forever.
Getting the timing right matters more than a lot of first-time parents realize. According to the CDC’s guidance on newborn development, a baby’s features, alertness, and sleep patterns shift noticeably within just the first few weeks of life. That’s part of why newborn photographers, myself included, recommend booking early and scheduling the session itself within a fairly tight window after birth.

WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE OUR INFANT PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?
I recommend booking your newborn photography session during your second trimester. We schedule around your due date, and because I only take a limited number of due dates each week — knowing that actual birth dates can vary quite a bit — booking early is the best way to make sure your spot is reserved.
Once your little one has arrived, we’ll finalize the exact date and time of your session. Typically, this ends up being within ten days of your baby’s birthday.
If you’d like to see what a full in-home or studio newborn session actually looks like once it’s booked, I’ve laid out the details on my in-home newborn photography page and my studio newborn packages page.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO NEWBORN SESSIONS AFTER MY BABY IS A COUPLE OF WEEKS OLD?
Yes, absolutely. I’ve photographed newborn sessions with babies a full month old, and while working within 10–14 days of birth is my general preference, it’s not a hard rule. Babies change so much within just the first couple of weeks, which is exactly why I lean toward scheduling within the first ten days whenever possible — but life doesn’t always cooperate with a perfect timeline, and that’s okay.
The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that newborns are typically at their sleepiest and most flexible for gentle posing in these very early weeks, which is the main reason for that recommended window — not a strict cutoff, just a general best-practice guideline.

WHAT IF I’VE ALREADY HAD MY BABY AND WANT TO SCHEDULE NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS?
No worries at all. My schedule tends to fill up quickly, but I’m flexible, and if I have availability, I would love to work with you. Your photos will be just as special regardless of whether they’re taken at the textbook-ideal time. We can celebrate whatever season you’re currently in — newborn, a few weeks old, or even a few months in.
What If My Due Date Changes?
This is one of the most common questions I get, and a completely understandable one. Babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule, which is exactly why I build flexibility into my calendar around your estimated due date rather than locking in one fixed day months in advance. Once your baby actually arrives, we’ll confirm the real session date together, typically within that first week to ten days.
If your baby arrives early, we’ll simply move your session up as soon as you’re ready. If your baby arrives later than expected, we adjust the other direction. Either way, communication early and often is the key to making sure your session still lands in that ideal early window.
How Far in Advance Should I Reach Out?
Because newborn sessions are tied to a due date rather than a fixed calendar date, most Kettering and Dayton-area families reach out sometime in their second trimester, once things feel a bit more settled and real. That said, if you’re further along, or already have your baby, don’t let that stop you from reaching out — I’ll always do my best to accommodate your timeline.
What Happens During the Booking Process?
Once you reach out, here’s generally what to expect:
- Initial conversation. We’ll talk through your due date, whether you’re interested in an in-home or studio session, and any specific details or preferences you have in mind.
- Reserving your date. A session fee secures your spot on my calendar around your estimated due date.
- Staying in touch as your due date approaches. As you get closer to delivery, we’ll stay in communication so we can finalize your exact session date quickly once baby arrives.
- Booking the actual session date. Once your baby is born, we’ll lock in a specific date, typically within the first week to ten days after birth.
Preparing While You Wait
The weeks leading up to your due date are a great time to think through a few extra details for your session — outfit choices, sentimental items you’d like included, and whether you’re leaning toward an in-home or studio setting. If you’d like some direction on outfit and color choices ahead of time, I’ve written a full guide on choosing color palettes for your newborn session.
Why Booking Early Actually Matters
It’s easy to assume you have plenty of time to book a newborn photographer, especially early in pregnancy when the due date still feels far away. But a few things make early booking genuinely important, not just a suggestion:
Limited weekly availability. Because newborn sessions have to happen within a tight window after birth, I can only reasonably hold a small number of due dates each week. Once those spots for a given week fill up, they’re gone, regardless of how far in advance you originally started researching photographers.
Unpredictable birth timing. Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, which means photographers need built-in flexibility around each family’s estimated date. Booking early gives us the most room to work with if your baby arrives a little earlier or later than expected.
Less stress once baby arrives. The first week or two with a newborn is overwhelming enough without also trying to research and book a photographer from scratch. Having your session already reserved means one less decision to make during an already exhausting stretch.
Peace of mind during pregnancy. For a lot of expecting parents, having the newborn session already planned and paid for is one small piece of the puzzle that feels settled well before the due date arrives.
What Sets a Specialized Newborn Photographer Apart
Not every photographer who offers newborn sessions has specific training in newborn safety and posing. When you’re researching Kettering or Dayton-area photographers, it’s worth asking directly about their experience specifically with newborns, rather than assuming general portrait experience automatically translates.
A specialized newborn photographer will typically be well-versed in:
- Safe positioning and support techniques for very young babies
- Reading a newborn’s cues for feeding, soothing, and comfort throughout a session
- Working calmly and patiently around an unpredictable schedule
- Editing that reflects the soft, delicate look specific to newborn photography
Asking about this experience upfront, alongside your booking timeline questions, helps make sure you’re working with someone equipped for this particular stage.
