Newport KY Newborn Photographer | Raan’s Newborn Session

December 2, 2023

I’m so excited to share this Newport, Kentucky newborn photography session with you today. You might remember seeing this family a few months ago — I recently did a gender reveal session with them, combined with an extended family session.

Newport KY Newborn Photographer

The Cherucheril family is such a sweet family, and I was thrilled to work with them again, especially since the sweet baby boy, Raan — whose gender was revealed back in the spring — had finally made his appearance. One of the true highlights of my job is watching families grow over time, and this was a perfect example: seeing this sweet mama pregnant in the spring, and then meeting this much-anticipated baby boy once he arrived.

Mama had such a warm, loving personality, and you could feel her love for her family in every frame. Dad was caring and attentive throughout the whole session. And big brother loved his new little brother so much — he was so protective of him the entire time. I love capturing these genuine interactions between family members; they’re often what a family treasures most, years down the road.

Going With the Flow

Raan was such a calm, easygoing baby during his session. He mostly wanted to sleep, which is completely normal for a newborn this age. He also loved being swaddled, which made for some especially adorable, classic newborn portraits. You’ll see a mix of swaddled portraits and more candid, lifestyle-style images throughout this session.

That mix is intentional. During a newborn session, your baby sets the pace, not the other way around. If they need a break, they get a break. If they need to eat, we pause so they can nurse or feed. If they want to sleep through most of the session, we let them sleep. Whatever’s needed in the moment, we adjust — and I capture beautiful images all along the way.

If you’d like to see what a full newborn session looks like from start to finish, whether in-home or in-studio, I’ve laid out the details on my in-home newborn photography page and my studio newborn packages page.

Capturing the Little “Newborn” Things

We made sure to capture all of the small, fleeting newborn details: Raan’s sweet, sleepy face; his soft skin and tiny toes; his little legs still tucked up the way they were inside his mama’s tummy; the specific way his mother held him after nine long months of waiting; the big, satisfying baby stretches; and of course, plenty of quiet, tender newborn snuggles.

Newborn lifestyle photography, like Raan’s session, includes a mix of posed portraits and more candid, in-the-moment shots. It’s important to me as a photographer to capture each family’s individual personality alongside the classic newborn details — whether that’s a special blanket, a meaningful heirloom toy, or a specific little habit that will help this family remember this exact season years from now.

Babies Don’t Keep

Whether you’re bringing home your first baby or your fourth, so much changes in those early months. Newborns change unbelievably quickly, which is exactly why capturing these fleeting moments matters so much.

As the saying goes, “babies don’t keep.” As a photographer, my job is to capture all of these small, in-between baby moments, so that someday — when your baby is 18 and heading off to college — you can look back at these images and be transported right back to these magical early days. These photos become genuine family heirlooms, meant to be cherished by your children and, eventually, their children too.

What to Expect From Your Newport Newborn Session

If Raan’s session has you thinking about booking your own, here’s a general sense of how the day flows. We’ll typically start in the nursery or a bedroom with good natural light, working through classic swaddled portraits first while your baby is calmest. From there, we move into more candid, lifestyle-style shots — parents holding baby, siblings interacting, quiet family moments throughout your home.

Sessions generally run two to three hours, which gives us plenty of room for feeding breaks, soothing, and outfit changes without ever feeling rushed. I always tell families: your only job during the session is to relax and enjoy your baby. I’ll handle the rest, from posing prompts to keeping things moving at a comfortable pace.

Preparing for Your Session

A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth, successful session:

  • Pick one or two rooms with good natural light. You don’t need your whole home “photo ready” — we can work beautifully with just a nursery or a bright bedroom corner.
  • Think about sentimental details ahead of time. A handmade blanket, a family heirloom, or a meaningful keepsake can add real depth to your gallery, the same way Raan’s session captured small, personal touches specific to his family.
  • Keep the room warm. A warm space helps your baby settle and stay comfortable throughout the session.
  • Don’t stress about a strict schedule. Newborns don’t run on a predictable clock, and that’s completely normal — we build in flexibility for exactly that reason.
  • Prepare older siblings, too. If you have another child joining the session, a quick conversation beforehand about what to expect can make a big difference in how comfortable they feel.

Turning These Early Days Into Lasting Artwork

Raan’s expressions, his tiny stretches, the quiet moment of his mother holding him — these are exactly the kinds of images that deserve to be more than a phone camera roll memory. I always encourage families to have their favorite images printed, whether as framed nursery artwork or preserved inside an heirloom album that can be passed down for generations.

Why Newport Families Choose In-Home Sessions

Newport, Kentucky sits right along the Ohio River, just across from Cincinnati, and its historic, walkable neighborhoods make it one of my favorite communities to photograph newborns in. A few reasons in-home sessions work especially well for Newport families:

  • No travel required, which matters enormously during the exhausting first couple of weeks after bringing a baby home.
  • Older siblings settle in more naturally in their own space — exactly what allowed Raan’s big brother to be so affectionately protective throughout the session.
  • Personal, meaningful details become part of the story — a favorite blanket, a specific nursery detail, or a family tradition all add real depth to your gallery.
  • The session moves at your baby’s pace, with plenty of built-in time for feeding, soothing, and simple snuggles between shots.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, newborns settle most easily in calm, familiar, low-stimulation environments — which is a big part of why in-home sessions so often lead to the kind of relaxed, sleepy portraits Raan’s family ended up with.

Timing Your Newport Newborn Session

I typically recommend booking a newborn session within the first one to two weeks after birth, while babies are still naturally sleepy and settle easily into classic newborn poses. The CDC’s guidance on newborn development is a good reminder of just how quickly a baby’s features, alertness, and sleep patterns shift within only the first month of life — all the more reason to schedule your session as early as safely possible.

Because that early window is short, I always recommend reserving your session date during pregnancy, so it’s locked in well before your due date arrives.

Serving Newport, KY, and the Greater Cincinnati Area

Newport is one of several close-knit river communities I love photographing newborns in, right alongside neighboring Cincinnati, Ohio. If you’re newer to the area, Newport’s historic Mansion Hill and East Row neighborhoods offer some of the most charming, character-filled homes for in-home sessions in the entire region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you travel to Newport, Kentucky for newborn sessions? Yes — in-home newborn sessions are available throughout Newport and the greater Cincinnati area. Studio sessions are also available if you’d prefer that setting instead.

How soon after birth should we book our session? Ideally within the first one to two weeks, while your baby is still naturally sleepy. I recommend reserving your date during pregnancy since this window fills quickly.

Can older siblings be part of the session? Absolutely, and I love including them. Sibling interactions, like the bond between Raan and his big brother, often become some of the most treasured images from the whole gallery.

What if our baby doesn’t sleep during the session? That’s completely fine. We capture both sleepy, swaddled portraits and more candid, awake lifestyle images, so your gallery reflects whatever your baby gives us that day.
