One of my favorite types of sessions to shoot for families is a Cincinati Cake Smash photography session! Wherever you are in the Cincinnati area, cake smashes are a fun, carefree way to celebrate your little turning one!

So let’s talk about cake smash photography sessions!

In case “cake smash” is a new term to you, it means giving your sweet one year old a mini cake for them to dig (or smash) into to celebrate their first birthday!

These sessions always turn out great! They’re so much fun, and it’s funny to see your babe’s reaction to the cake, especially if it’s their first time eating it. It can be messy, so I recommend bringing a change of clothes for your babe, just in case.

Of course, it isn’t all about your little one… Mom and Dad are welcome to join in the cake eating fun. And the cake smash itself doesn’t have to take up the entire session, either! It can be just a part of your session with more traditional family photos or (cake free) birthday photos mixed in!

This sweet family and their little boy, Ezekiel were so fun to work with. This really was the perfect cake smash session! We met at Kyle Park in Circleville, Ohio for this one. I love to work outside for cake smashes because we don’t have to worry about the mess! And of course, the lighting is always beautiful.

Tips and Tricks for a Successful Photography Session

In order to have a “smooth” cake smash photo session, I have a few recommendations!

Please schedule your cake smash photography session six weeks out so that I can ensure I have an opening and so that you can prepare your little birthday babe for their special day!

I recommend dressing your birthday babe in a simple outfit so their face can really shine! Rompers are a personal favorite of mine, especially for little ones on the move! They have freedom and can be comfortable without little diapers showing. I have a blog post dedicated to where you can buy outfits for your baby; and another dedicated to outfits for the whole family if you need inspiration!

Let Them Eat Cake!

Make sure your baby is well rested and isn’t hungry; we don’t want any hangry babies! You can bring some snacks along with you in case they need a little pick-me-up. Snacks also come in handy in case your little isn’t feeling the cake We can stick their favorite snacks into the frosting on the back side of the cake and it will look like they’re going for the cake!

A little preparation goes a long way here, too! If the cake is your little’s first time eating sugar, they might not be into it, so try introducing little sweets a couple of weeks before your photo session.

If your little is teething, a little Tylenol or Orajel (or whatever other teething remedy you prefer) might be a good idea so your babe isn’t bothered and is ready for their cake!

Any grocery store’s bakery will have adorable mini cakes, and with a little planning you can have a custom cake made for your photo session. A cupcake is a great (waste-free) alternative to an entire cake!
