First time doing family photographs? Here’s what you need to know, from Dayton Ohio Family and Newborn Photographer!
If you’ve never done family photographs before, it can be daunting! But I’m here to help you feel prepared for the whole experience, so that you can relax and enjoy yourselves!
For the best possible lighting, I like to start each session between 1-2 hours after sunrise or 1-2 hours before sunset. This will give your photos a beautiful, airy feel and will make you and your family look their best. If these times don’t work for you, no worries! There are a few locations that we can work in that allow us to be more flexible with the time without sacrificing the quality of your photos.
If you’re feeling worried about what to wear, don’t be! I send out a style and experience guide to walk you through what to wear and what to photograph the best! I also have a comprehensive blog post on the subject. Generally, I recommend my clients wear light, basic neutrals that coordinate with each other and have a dressy feel versus a casual feel. If you’re still feeling unsure about what to wear then reach out to me! I can help you pick out what works best for you and your session!
Each session is very laidback! We take our time and there’s no pressure! I know that with littles, life can be unpredictable and kids don’t always do what we want them to. (In fact, I have an entire blog post dedicated to all my tips and tricks for working with toddlers!) But just relax! I’m very familiar with working with children, and I have several tips up my sleeve. We will get a ton of fantastic photos, no matter what!
I do a combination of posed photos and candid photos. We will get photos of everyone looking at the camera, but I love to focus on the “in the moment” photos. I also like to work with prompts to help you “pose.”
One of my favorite prompts is to place Mom and Dad standing side by side in front of me from a distance. Then I have the children stand behind me and wait… When I tell them to go, they run to give Mom and Dad the biggest hug! I just tell Mom and Dad to enjoy the moment! This is where I get some of the sweetest photos from the session!
Another favorite prompt of mine is to have Mom or Dad hold their little up in the air. This one always results in lots and lots of giggles and adorable photos.
I have a whole list of my favorite Dayton area locations for family photos! I have about 8-10 to choose from, but my personalized recommendations for you and your family will be based on what works best for you. If you have little ones that like to run, then I will send you locations that have room to run and be free while being safe. If you have older children or children that don’t need to run wild, and you’re thinking you want more of a high-end city feel for your session, then I will send you some options that fit that style!
I also do in-home photography sessions! These are a favorite, especially for newborn photo sessions but we can do it for any age!
I can’t wait to work with you! Together we can create beautiful photos for your family to enjoy forever.
