I’m a Dayton newborn baby photographer serving families throughout the Miami Valley, including West Milton, and I’m so excited to share this sweet in-home session with you today. The Bak family just welcomed baby Grace, and everyone — especially her big brother and big sister — was thrilled to meet her.
A Familiar Face: Working With the Bak Family Again
This wasn’t my first time photographing the Bak family. I had the honor of working with them last year for big sister Madelyn’s first birthday session, so getting to come back for Grace’s newborn session felt extra special. This was a custom session, combining Grace’s individual newborn portraits with full family photos that included everyone.
For families in West Milton and the surrounding Dayton area, this kind of return visit is something I love — watching a family grow over the years, and getting to be trusted again and again to capture each new chapter, is one of the best parts of this job.
Grace’s Individual Newborn Photos
We started with Grace’s individual newborn portraits. She loved being swaddled and couldn’t help but smile the entire time she was wrapped up. Swaddling is one of my favorite techniques for newborn sessions because it almost always calms a baby right down — and as an added bonus, it’s incredibly photogenic. The soft white swaddle and matching bow gave Grace’s individual portraits a light, bright, timeless look.

Moving Into Family Photos
Once Grace’s individual portraits were finished, we moved into what’s technically Madelyn’s bedroom for the family portion of the session. Getting a toddler and a young child to cooperate for photos is always a bit of a process — but Mom came prepared. Her secret weapon was mini marshmallows, handed out every time George or Madelyn gave a great smile. It worked like a charm.
What made this session so special wasn’t just getting everyone to look at the camera — it was watching how this family interacts with each other. Madelyn is clearly a daddy’s girl, staying right by his side for most of the session. Watching Mom hold baby Grace was its own kind of beautiful; there’s a particular softness in a mother’s expression with a newborn that’s hard to describe and easy to recognize the moment you see it. And of course, there was the pure fascination both older siblings had with their new baby sister — that wide-eyed curiosity that only comes with meeting a brand-new family member for the first time.
Families throughout West Milton, Troy, and the greater Dayton area often ask whether sibling cooperation is something to worry about ahead of a session. The Unscripted Moments
At the end of the session, I could tell Grace’s big brother and sister were about done posing — kids that age have a limited window of patience, and we’d used most of it. So instead of pushing for one more posed shot, I asked them a simple question: what do you think your baby sister is doing in her crib? They ran over to look, completely unaware their photo was being taken, and it gave us some of the sweetest images of the whole day — two curious siblings peering over the crib rail at their new sister.
This is something I try to build into every session, whether it’s in Dayton, West Milton, or anywhere else in the Miami Valley: some of the best photographs happen in the moments that aren’t posed at all. The American Academy of Pediatrics has written about how quickly a newborn’s earliest expressions and interactions with siblings change in just the first weeks of life — which is exactly why these unscripted, in-the-moment photos end up meaning so much later on.
